Limestone mountains, caves, streams and ethnic villages: what to know before your first visit to Xuan Son National Park.

Xuan Son National Park covers the mountainous west of Phu Tho province, where it meets Son La and Hoa Binh. It protects primary forest, limestone mountains, caves and streams, and it is home to Muong and Dao communities. For travellers based in Hanoi, it is one of the easiest ways to see wild northern Vietnam without a long journey.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
• Forest walks. Trails lead through tall trees and bamboo. Many are easy, some are steep and muddy after rain.
• Caves. The park is known for limestone caves with stalactites. Go with a local guide and a good torch.
• Streams and waterfalls. In the warm months, cool streams are a highlight. Swim only where locals say it is safe.
• Village visits. Muong and Dao villages keep stilt houses, home cooking and traditional crafts.

Start early, when the forest is cool and birds are active. Choose one main activity rather than trying to do everything: a cave in the morning and a village lunch, or a long forest walk and a stream in the afternoon. Return before dark; mountain roads are unlit.
WHAT TO BRING
• Shoes with grip, and sandals for streams.
• Rain jacket, especially from May to September.
• Insect repellent and a small first-aid kit.
• Cash for local guides and food.
WHERE TO STAY
There are simple homestays in the park. Many visitors prefer a base just outside, with more comfort and easy access to both Xuan Son and the Long Coc tea hills. Ngoc Dong Eco Village in Thanh Son lets you combine forest days with quiet evenings, local meals and a swim.
