The Long Coc tea hills in Phu Tho look like a green sea of small round islands. On a clear morning the mist sits between the hills and slowly lifts as the sun comes up. It is one of the quietest landscapes in northern Vietnam, and still far from the tour bus routes. GETTING THERE Most guests stay the night at Ngoc Dong Eco Village and leave early in the morning. We tell you the best departure time the evening before, based on the weather.

WHEN TO GO - Time of day: sunrise, roughly 5:30 to 7:00 depending on the season. - After rain the tea looks greenest; on dry days the views are clearer. - Weather and visibility change from day to day, so keep your plan flexible. WHAT TO BRING - A light jacket. Mornings on the hills are cool, even in summer. - Shoes with grip. Paths between the tea rows can be muddy. - A charged phone or camera, and a little cash for local tea. BE A GOOD GUEST The tea hills are farms, not a park. Walk on the paths, do not pick leaves, and ask before photographing tea pickers.
