Five-Colour Sticky Rice and the Village Food of Phu Tho
A big tray on the floor of a wooden stilt house, everyone sharing every dish.
Local feast with five-colour sticky rice, grilled meat and fresh herbs
In Hanoi you eat fast, standing at a street stall. In the countryside of Phu Tho a meal is slower: a big tray set on the floor of a wooden stilt house, everyone sitting around it, sharing every dish. This is how we serve food at Ngoc Dong Eco Village.
FIVE-COLOUR STICKY RICE
The dish you will remember is xoi ngu sac, sticky rice in five colours: red, yellow, purple, green and white. The colours come from leaves, roots and flowers, not from artificial dye. In the mountain villages of northern Vietnam it is made for festivals and for welcoming guests.
